About the Dentistry for Nervous Patients Service
The Dentistry for Nervous Patients service is designed for people who find dental treatment difficult due to anxiety, fear, or previous negative experiences.
This is not a general dental service with occasional sedation. It is a structured, clinician-led pathway created specifically for patients who require additional support in order to receive dental care safely and appropriately.
Why this service exists
Dental anxiety affects patients in different ways. Some people feel nervous but are able to cope with treatment. Others experience panic, distress, or complete avoidance of dental care.
For patients in the latter group, standard dental appointments may not be suitable.
This service exists to provide:
A predictable and structured process
Additional time and explanation
Appropriate use of IV sedation where clinically indicated
A non-judgemental approach to long-term dental avoidance

The aim is to help patients access dental care in a way that is manageable for them.
A structured pathway for nervous patients
The Dentistry for Nervous Patients service follows a clear pathway:
Alternatively you can book straight in with Dr Frances for a paid clinical consultation with Dr Frances.
Patients are not required to proceed at any stage and may pause or stop the process at any point.
Clinical leadership and team-based care
The service operates under a clinician-led model.
All patients who proceed to clinical assessment are:
- Assessed by Dr Frances Carling-Thom
- Diagnosed by her
- Provided with a treatment plan developed by her
In some cases, elements of treatment may be delivered by members of her clinical team. This is done only when clinically appropriate and always in the best interests of the patient.
